Back to students

Sólveig Hansdóttir

Sol was born and raised in a small town outside of Reykjavík, called Hafnarfjörður.

She studied her BA in Reykjavík and after graduating moved to London to join the MA at Central Saint Martins.
“Fashion for me was like a peculiar hybrid between design, art and theory – that’s how I approach it. A sweet interdisciplinary mash.”

Student Project

Sol started by looking at films from the well-known Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni from the 1960’s. My main inspiration were the women in the movies and the way they treated their bags. It was quite interesting to me; they were swinging them around, they threw them on the table, on the floor and they held them in a peculiar way.” She then went on to mock up her bags to really understand how the bag and the materials should be treated and how complex, eccentric, ‘irrational’ and quirky women would use them.

Mentorship

MENTOR: ORSOLA DE CASTRO
Founder and Global Creative Director of Fashion Revolution.

Background

“I have always found garments as a way of having control and being autonomous. At an early age garments were really important for me and being able to create my own garments is the ultimate autonomy for me, a way of having control and making a difference.”
