Luke Derrick

Originally hailing from Oxford, England.

Luke is a menswear designer in his sixth and final year of study at Central Saint Martins. With industry experience accrued at Brioni, Alexander McQueen, and on Savile Row, his training has led him towards a personal fascination of the tailored, the coded, and the archetype.
“Originally it was via designing sportswear for my rowing team at school that I made my first encounters with sketching clothes, but gradually I became fascinated with wider fashion as I realised how easily one could create one’s own identity using clothes alone – as quite an unconfident and timid teenager, these discoveries were as powerful as they were life changing and set the wheels in motion for where I took my studies.”

Student Project

MODULARITY
Luke chose to redesign the Gommino. “...to respectfully rework such an intrinsic part of the Tod’s DNA was a really delicate challenge”. He did this by analysing the way the shoe is worn in the present day. His conclusion: It was a ubiquitous leisure sneaker rather than a driving shoe. So he set on his mission to attempt a new sole (and therein brand identity) that more reflected how the Tod’s client of today interacts with its core product.

Background

Inspired by his father’s passion for classic cars of the 60’s, the work was immediately influenced by Tod’s heritage of travel and automotive culture. “Most directly, it led me to examine the classics of 60’s and 70’s Italian car design, pulling colour palettes from modernist leather interiors, and references for luggage silhouettes from Ferrari tool kits.”
