Chaney Manshu Diao

Chaney comes from mainland China and graduated from Central Saint Martins BA fashion in 2019 and now finds herself on the MA course.

Chaney’s enthusiasm for fashion started to grow when first coming across the book Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, which was gifted by a friend who was studying on the fashion course in Parsons at that time. “I was drawn to McQueen’s sensitivity and his talent in expressing inner feelings through the dressed bodies, which pictured fashion in my mind as an artistic language that would allow me to make my own poetry.”

Student Project

TOES AND DOTS
The word “repetitive” is what Chaney would use to describe the craft involved in the project. “I was digging into the shoe-maker’s gesture of making a Gommino shoe. By identifying and repeating these processes, I am looking for a beauty/spirit beyond the material form. This led to the recreation of the process, that in itself, is a work of art.”
