Adam Elyassé

Adam is of Moroccan/Saharan descent, born and raised in East London.

Spending an equal amount of seasons in both Morocco and the UK every year, which has played a strong part in evoking a sense of duality in identity. "I carry more than one voice on my shoulders. I remember speaking to the elderly women in my family, one saying this exact phrase to me. My family are still back home in Morocco, a large family at that, who have become part of their own community. So I say this again, I have a duty to carry more than one voice on my shoulders, this is my service.”

Student Project

A keyword to describe Adam’s project would be “concinnity”, the “skilful and harmonious arrangement or fitting together the different parts of something”. My approach to design has always been modular, as a way to separate information into small groups. “Finding ways to combine these different groups (cultural references, design, anatomy, brand image, concept) is how I informed the narrative of this project. The imperfections of design and aesthetic in this project are purposely there to evoke an authentic sense of my surroundings and background. Furthermore, the purpose of each design follows the same authentic approach as the concept.”

Background

I am an artist first, this has been my foundation dating back to my childhood when a pen and paper were the only tools I possessed to express myself. My interest in engineering and anatomy, my love for renaissance paintings in Italy, Michelangelo and Caravaggio, amongst many other elements have woven my approach to art by translating it into the human body, leading to the pursuit of fashion.
